PRACTICAL GUIDE

Hide private information in an image

Blur and pixelation change appearance, but they can leave recognisable patterns. Use an opaque cover when information must not remain readable.

Inspect the whole picture

Look for addresses, barcodes, QR codes, faces, reflections, notification previews and repeated identifiers. Covering one visible account number does not remove the same information elsewhere in a screenshot.

Choose an opaque rectangle

Use Cover Sensitive Area and drag over the entire item with a margin. The export creates a new raster image with the cover burned into its pixels. For text that must remain secret, do not rely solely on a mild blur or coarse pixelation.

Review the exported copy

Open the downloaded file and zoom in to check all edges of the cover. Confirm you are sharing the exported copy rather than the original. If a messaging app retains previous attachments, remove an accidentally selected original before sending.

Consider metadata separately

Browser image exports omit the original EXIF and colour profile, but the visible image may still identify a person or place. Metadata removal is not a complete anonymity guarantee. Use only the image area needed for the intended conversation.
